The Lancashire Youth Games were first introduced in 1997 and since then have gone from strength to strength, being regarded as the pinnacle of local competition sport for young people. It is estimated that since its inception over 15,000 young people have taken part in event finals across the county.

All 14 districts of Lancashire field teams in a range of sports including cricket, rugby union, high five netball, athletics, tennis and gymnastics across a variety of age groups. Over the years a number of successful athletes have attended the events including Steve Daley, Richard Whitehead,  Sue Smith and Craig Heap. This year's gymnastics event will see Beth Tweddle, World Champion gymnast, oversee the gymnastics finals.

2008 marked a new high for the Lancashire Youth Games with the introduction of a Disability event which proved to be a huge success. Fifty teams from special educational schools across Lancashire participated in Boccia, Football and a PMLD Sensory event giving over 400 children the opportunity to take part in a fun, active, and friendly sporting environment.

The scale of the Youth Games would not be sustainable were it not for the continuing support of James Hall and Co (Southport) Ltd SPAR who first offered their support in 2007.  It re-branded the event into the SPAR Lancashire Youth Games and Lancashire Sport Partnership is indebted to their ongoing support.
