EFDS to Manage Inclusive Fitness Initiative

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) has announced that the management of the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) will move from consultants MLS to within the EFDS structure.

In preparation for the forthcoming incorporation of the IFI within the Paralympic Legacy Plan, MLS is now working with the EFDS to support this transition.

The IFI programme supports the fitness industry to become more inclusive, catering for the needs of disabled and non-disabled people alike. Since 2001, through a range of projects and products the Initiative has supported facilities across England to create an inclusive service, increasing participation by disabled people.

Boccia England

Introducing the National Disability Boccia League

The National Pan Disability Boccia League organized by Boccia England is very excited about starting its 5th successive season. This season will be the first year the league will operate under Boccia England, prior to this it was organized from within CP Sport. The league has grown year on year, the first season had 35 teams enter and last season saw this increase to over 140 teams.

The aim of the National Pan Disability Boccia League is to widen the opportunity for some competitive Boccia for those who perhaps are not eligible to take part in our usual Regional and National events. Boccia is becoming a very popular game amongst so many sectors of the community and indeed across the whole age range. The league offers a chance for disabled people to complete together at a local level and then have the opportunity to progress to a National Final.

Organisations can apply for grants between £250 and £5,000, which can be used to help overcome barriers that stop disabled people volunteering, such as specific equipment, a lack of suitable access and understanding of disability issues.

These grants are part of the £2 million Access to Volunteering Fund, which was developed by the Office of the Third Sector in the Cabinet Office as a pilot scheme in Greater London, the West Midlands and the North West.

The fund operates between Autumn 2009 and Spring 2011 over five grant rounds. The deadline for applications for the second round funding is 8 February 2010. In addition to supporting disabled volunteers, the pilot will test different ways to apply for funds such as video applications and face-to-face pitches. The grant is being managed by a consortium comprising Charities Aid Foundation, RNIB and Digital Public.
