Research

Our partnership collects, analyses and shares strategic sports information and statistics about Lancashire. Working closely with our partners we can provide information on sporting facilities, the demand for sports and information on how many people are physically active.

This strategic information is shared across our partnership and is essential in making decisions on the development of sport across the county.

We have three main ways of collecting data:

Active Places

Many of our local authority partners contribute to this on-line database of sporting facilities across Lancashire. The system was developed by Sport England and has details of facilities across England. The database can be accessed by the general public and for more detailed information sports development professionals can access an enhanced version of the system called Active Places Power.

Active People Survey

The Active People Survey is an annual telephone survey of adults aged 16+ living in England. A total of 363,724 telephone interviews originally took part  between October 2005 and October 2006 making it the largest ever survey in England about individual's participation in sport and physical activity. A smaller survey will take place every year.

The survey gathers data on the type, duration and intensity of people's participation in different types of sport and active recreation, as well as information about volunteering, club membership (member of a club where play sport), receiving tuition from an instructor or coach, participation in competitive sport and satisfaction with local sports provision.

Year 9 schoolchildren survey

Year 9 schoolchildren (mostly 13 and 14 year olds) have been identified as a key group.  It represents the end of Key Stage 3 (the forthcoming commencement of GCSE studies) and is recognised as a key drop-out point for participation in sport and physical activity.  If young people are not involved in sport activities by Year 9, it tends to become progressively more difficult to attract/retain them thereafter.  For this reason a survey of this age group has been conducted in the county every three years since 2001.

Lancashire Specific data

We have other data about sport and physical activity that we regularly share with our partners to enable them to make informed and accurate decisions.
