AROUND 100,000 young people in Lancashire are trying to set an earth-shaking world record.
A mass 'Wake Up & Shake Up' in schools across the county will kick-start a week of exciting events organised by Lancashire County Council's School Sports Partnerships, Lancashire Healthy Schools Team and Rock FM.
The attempt is part of Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week, which runs from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July 2009.
Sports personalities, Olympic and Paralympic champions will be joining in the fun as well.
At 09.15 on Monday 29 June, Rock FM will launch National School Sports Week for Lancashire by playing three special mixes of chart-toppers.
Thousands of pupils across Lancashire will be tuned in to perform a simultaneous 'Wake Up & Shake Up' – a basic aerobic routine performed to music and suitable for children of all ages and abilities.
The week will be launched at Corpus ChristiCatholicSportsCollege in Preston. There will be a multi-sports, Olympic-themed activity day with various competitions and events led by Preston City Council's Competition Manager.
Great Britain swimmer and current world-record holder Sascha Kindred, whose career includes six Paralympic, five world and eight European Championship gold medals, will be dropping in during the day in his role as a School Sport Ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust.
Corpus Christi will also welcome Lisa Daley, a visually impaired athlete who has represented Great Britain on a number of occasions. Lisa has won numerous national and international titles in the 100m, 200m and 400m since the age of 17. She has been a world record holder, a world champion and is a supporter of British Blind Sport.
St Andrew's CE Primary School, in Preston, is welcoming British long-distance runner Helen Clitheroe. She competed in the 1500m at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Craig Vickers, development manager of Preston School Sports Partnership, said: "We are all very excited about this week. Lots of schools are taking part and it's fantastic that we have got Olympic and Paralympic athletes on board who provide such inspiration to our pupils."
Working with the Youth Sport Trust, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week 2009 will demonstrate that it is possible for each school-aged child in Lancashire and across the country, to do five hours of high quality PE and sport each week both in and out of school.
More than 10,000 schools across the country will be taking part in the week.
