The 5 Hour Offer

Extending Activities: Increasing Sporting Opportunities for Young People in Lancashire.

From September 2008 Lancashire Sport will be increasing the sporting opportunities for children and young people between the ages of 5 and 19 by co-ordinating the delivery of 10 week activity programmes throughout the county. This programme will run for three years until March 2011.

The Lancashire Extending Activities Plan forms part of the overall ‘5 hour framework for Children and Young People’ both of which have received national recognition for examples of good practice following a presentation delivered to Sport England, Youth Sport Trust and DCMS in June.

The programmes of activity have been developed in consultation with young people and in partnership with sport and physical activity providers in each of the 14 local authority areas in Lancashire

In the first year the Extending Activities programme will consist of 36 different activities ranging from innovation sports such as climbing, trampolining, cheerleading, skateboarding, street dance, ultimate frisbee to more traditional sports such as athletics, football, hockey and volleyball and adaptations derived for these traditional sports such as sports hall athletics, sepak takaw, futsal and extreme golf.

The activities will be delivered by a range of agencies ranging from freelance/ independent practitioners for the more specialist activities, Local Authority sports development staff and community coaches (where current hours are being extended), club coaches, youth and community workers and voluntary sector organisations. The activities will take place primarily on school sites and in leisure centres. Club settings, youth clubs and private sector facilities are being used in some circumstances. Some areas are also utilising the natural environment to deliver activities such as beaches, parks and forests.

Lancashire Sport continue to support the development of sport and physical activity for young people and look forward to widening access to opportunities through ‘Extending Activities’.

Following the delivery of the 10 week programme the aim is to provide exit routes for participants to access clubs and competition which will be facilitated through the network of newly appointed club development officers and competition managers.
