Building Better Opportunities

Building Better Opportunities is a new national programme from The Big Lottery Fund who is matching funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020 to invest in local projects tackling the root causes of poverty, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth.

Selnet is leading a partnership of over 60 Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise Organisations to deliver three new projects across Lancashire. Lancashire Sport Partnership is one of these 60 organisations assisting in the delivery of the programme.

Each project will work with people who are currently not working and would like a job, but have all sorts of things stopping them.

Age of Opportunity

Age of Opportunity will support those over 50 who are currently unemployed or economically inactive and will help to improve their skills and employability.

Invest in Youth

Invest in Youth support young people who are aged 15-24 and who are unemployed or economically inactive. This included those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) or at risk of becoming NEET and will help to improve their skills and employability.

Changing Futures

Changing Futures will support 1,000 people who are most at risk of exclusion from the labour market to identify, reduce and remove their barriers to employment. The project will be delivered across Lancashire with a focus on areas where there are high levels of poverty, targeting Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, women, people with physical and/or mental health issues and learning difficulties.

Lancashire Sport Partnership Role

We have a small part within the following projects: Age of Opportunity and Invest in Youth elements of the BBO Programme.

Invest in Youth

We will provide access to activities across the County as part of their Positive Together, More Positive Together and wider delivery partner offers – which includes engaging young people through a diverse range of sport and physical activity for all abilities in their local community; encouraging them to volunteer; linking them with local sports organisations and community groups developing skills and providing training and work experience opportunities. We will be able to offer support for individuals who have an interest in sports participation and/or volunteering in sport to help develop their wellbeing, knowledge and skills. Young people will also be able to access our new Sports Hub which will provide access to volunteering and training opportunities.

Age of Opportunity

We will continue to develop the work through our newly established Active Aging Development Group working with a wide range of third sector partners. This group is working on the provision of a varied programme of Health and Wellbeing initiatives. We can also offer activity opportunities through our More Positive Together project and Challenge Through Sport initiatives as well as a wide selection on delivery partners. Lastly, opportunities for volunteering will be available to all interested in volunteering through our new Sports Hub database.
